The University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) College of Forestry and Natural Resources recently organised a workshop focused on Emerging Earth-Cooling Technologies. This initiative aims to enhance knowledge and foster collaboration on innovative climate solutions designed to mitigate the impacts of global warming.
The event took place at the HOD Hall, Provincial Capitol, and saw participation from various representatives, including those from relevant provincial departments, as well as organisations such as the Negrosanon Young Leaders and the Negrosanon Initiative for Climate and the Environment, along with other youth groups.
Dr. Lorena Sabino, Project Leader of PULSE UPLB, led the workshop, which served as a vital platform for researchers and stakeholders to engage in discussions regarding new technologies. Participants assessed the feasibility and potential impacts of these technologies while reinforcing science-based strategies that support sustainable environmental management and enhance climate resilience.
Negros Occidental Governor Bong Lacson highlighted the province’s unique position, characterised by both natural wealth and environmental challenges. He emphasised that the provincial government recognises the critical balance between fostering innovation and exercising caution. Governor Lacson expressed support for scientific inquiry and underscored the importance of responsible research.
“Here in Negros Occidental, we believe development must focus on people. We are committed to evidence-based decisions, and climate-responsive governance is not optional; it is essential,” he stated.
The governor further acknowledged the efforts of the UPLB Department of Social Forestry and Forest Governance and the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) for spearheading this initiative, which aims to strengthen the connection between science and society.
This workshop aligns with broader efforts to promote environmentally sustainable practices and responsible research, which are essential in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Stakeholders are encouraged to continue engaging in dialogues that advance the development of innovative solutions to these global issues.
