Data Governance, built for research organisations.
A working course on data governance for research organisations and the teams inside them. UK GDPR, the roles and responsibilities that hold a data governance system together, and the policies and tooling that turn intent into practice.

The course works through the current data protection landscape for UK and European research, the roles and responsibilities across the data governance lifecycle, and the policies, procedures and tooling that turn intent into operational practice. We cover data processing, storage, classification and retention, quality and risk management, and how to build an internal business case for the data governance work research organisations now need to do.

Common questions.
What is research data governance, and how is it different from research data management?
Research data management focuses on the operational handling of data across a project, from collection through storage to archiving. Research data governance is the institutional layer above that: the rules, roles and accountabilities that define how data is collected, used, shared and retired.
Do PhD students need data governance training?
They benefit from it, particularly those running their own data collection or working with external partners. The course is built to scale to mixed audiences of researchers, support staff and administrators.
Is this a GDPR compliance course?
GDPR is part of it, but the course is broader. We treat compliance as the floor rather than the goal, and we focus on building governance that supports good research as well as meeting the legal minimum.
