EIP Elevates Callum Docherty to Principal in the United States

EIP is proud to announce the promotion of Callum Docherty to the position of Principal, a recognition of his significant contributions to the firm’s international patent practice and his leadership within the expanding US team.

Callum Docherty holds qualifications as a UK and European Patent Attorney, a registered US Patent Agent, and a UPC Representative. With over a decade of experience in the patent field, he has specialised in drafting and prosecuting inventions across various sectors, including software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, physics-based innovations, autonomous systems, electronic devices, semiconductors, photonics, quantum computing, and green technologies. His cross-jurisdictional practice adeptly navigates the differing requirements of US and European patent offices, and he frequently advises clients on global patent strategy.

With a background in physics, Docherty is particularly well-equipped to assist with technically advanced inventions. His experience encompasses the full patent lifecycle, including EPO Oppositions and Appeals, and he collaborates closely with companies and inventors to provide strategic advice that aligns with their commercial objectives.

Prior to his career in the patent profession, Docherty completed a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Oxford, where he researched graphene and other two-dimensional materials using terahertz spectroscopy. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral research in Oxford’s Department of Physics.

Magnus Hallin, CEO of EIP, remarked on the promotion: ‘Callum brings an exceptional combination of technical depth and strategic clarity. His ability to navigate the differences between US and European practice has been instrumental in helping clients protect cutting-edge technologies across global markets. We are delighted to recognise his achievements with this promotion to Principal.’

Eric William, Senior Partner in the US, added: ‘Callum has rapidly become a key contributor to our US practice. His experience across AI, physics, and complex software-driven inventions, combined with his qualifications in the UK, EPO, and US patent offices, has made him an invaluable resource to both colleagues and clients. His promotion reflects both his technical excellence and his commitment to client service.’
