Collaboration Between BEL and SASMOS Aims to Enhance Indigenous Defence Electronics Manufacturing

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and SASMOS HET Technologies Ltd have formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing defence electronics and component manufacturing within India. The signing ceremony was attended by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The MoU was signed by Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL, and Chandrashekar H G, Chairman and Managing Director of SASMOS, signalling a commitment to collaborative efforts in the defence sector.

Joint Participation in Defence Electronics

This agreement establishes a framework for joint participation in defence electronics, system integration, and manufacturing, thereby supporting various defence programmes. The focus will be on localising essential components, enhancing domestic value addition, and strengthening both production capabilities and exports.

The partnership specifically targets key areas within defence and strategic programmes, including:

  • Photonics and fibre-optic systems
  • Avionics and electronic systems
  • Aerospace interconnect solutions
  • Electromechanical assemblies and subsystems for airborne, naval, and land platforms

Innovative Subsystem Development

During the event, a subsystem designed for a naval radar communication network was showcased. This subsystem was developed and qualified by the SASMOS team within a remarkable six-month timeframe.

The MoU signing occurred at the SASMOS Aerospace Special Economic Zone facility in Bengaluru, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration.

Commitment to Indigenisation

Manoj Jain expressed that BEL is committed to expanding its collaboration framework with capable Indian industry partners. He stated that this initiative aims to enhance indigenisation and improve programme execution efficiency, reflecting a ‘country-first’ approach.

This partnership is expected to bolster domestic manufacturing of electronic assemblies and interconnect solutions that are essential for defence platforms and the export market.

Precision Engineering and Quality Assurance

Chandrashekar H G highlighted that this collaboration strengthens SASMOS’s role in the defence manufacturing sector. He emphasised the company’s commitment to precision engineering, quality assurance, and scalable production, all of which are vital to meet the stringent standards of defence programmes.

Role of BEL and SASMOS

BEL operates under the Ministry of Defence, specialising in the production of electronics for various applications, including radar systems, fire control systems, communications, weapons, naval systems, electronic warfare, and avionics, among others. Meanwhile, SASMOS provides engineering and manufacturing services across the aerospace, defence, and transportation sectors.

The companies anticipate that their collaboration will significantly support supply chains and programme timelines for defence systems, both in domestic and export markets.
