ʻĀina Momona Invites Ocean Users to Participate in Kiaʻi o ke Kai Focus Groups

ʻĀina Momona is initiating a series of online focus groups beginning on March 24, aiming to develop a community-based framework for ocean projects in Hawaiʻi. The organisation is seeking the involvement of ocean users and stewards to contribute their insights during these sessions.

The focus groups, termed ‘talk story’ sessions, are designed to elevate the voices of individuals who have a deep connection with the sea. With ongoing decisions regarding ocean research and development becoming increasingly prominent across the islands, these discussions are crucial. The primary objective is to gather manaʻo on how to establish a respectful and effective engagement process for future initiatives.

For local fishing families or multigenerational coastal residents, these sessions present a significant opportunity to ensure that traditional knowledge and community needs are at the forefront of interactions with Hawaiʻi’s ocean resources.

Each participant will engage in a one-hour session via Zoom, and as a token of appreciation for their time and expertise, attendees will receive a $25 Visa gift card.

ʻĀina Momona is keen to gather input from a diverse range of individuals, including representatives from ʻAha Moku, cultural practitioners, lawaiʻa (fisherfolk), lifeguards, and surfers. Additionally, lineal families with longstanding connections to specific coastal areas, as well as practitioners of loko iʻa (fishponds), are encouraged to take part in these dialogues.

The schedule for the upcoming virtual focus groups is as follows:

  • March 24 at 12 p.m.
  • March 25 at 12 p.m.
  • April 6 at 12 p.m.
  • April 7 at 5:30 p.m.
  • April 8 at 12 p.m.

Organisers emphasise that the project regards the ocean as more than a mere resource; it is viewed as a source of sustenance, a space for practice, and an integral part of genealogy. Community members who steward ocean spaces will be able to provide valuable recommendations on responsible research practices during these sessions.
