LightSpeed Photonics, a company based in Singapore with origins in Hyderabad, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking photonic chip designed to enhance data transmission speeds significantly. This innovative chip operates at an impressive rate of 400 gigabits per second, far surpassing the capabilities of traditional copper wiring and even existing optical technologies.
Recognising the challenges posed by the increasing size of artificial intelligence models, LightSpeed identified data transmission as a critical bottleneck in performance. The new chip integrates photonics and electronics, providing a compact solution that is the result of collaborative efforts across Asia. By positioning optical conversion closer to processors, the chip effectively reduces latency and conserves energy. This advancement is particularly noteworthy given that nearly 40% of a data centre’s energy consumption is attributed to data movement.
LightSpeed is already conducting tests of this chip with several prominent players in the AI sector, indicating a strong interest in its potential applications.
