Case studies

How teams actually use this stuff.

Five honest accounts of how researchers, universities, and innovation teams have used ORBIT training, frameworks, and tools. Composite where we needed to protect identities, real where we had permission.

Case studies on consultancy websites are usually polished to the point of uselessness. We have tried to write these the way we would describe the work to a colleague at the pub. What was actually asked for, what we did, what worked, what we would not repeat.

CDT cohort

Embedding AREA into a Russell Group doctoral training programme.

A new Centre for Doctoral Training wanted RRI built into the first-year curriculum rather than bolted on as a one-off seminar. We ran the RRI Training course across three cohorts, then worked with the directors to thread AREA questions into milestone review forms.

Format
3 cohorts, tutor-led + ongoing CDT support
Outcome
AREA prompts now appear in transfer and viva paperwork

Read more on the CDT page.

University centre

Helping a research institute respond to a funder review.

A multidisciplinary institute had been told by its funder that RRI was insufficiently visible in its annual reporting. We used the RRI Maturity tool with senior leadership, ran a half-day workshop to translate the findings, and drafted the responsible innovation section of the response.

Format
Maturity assessment + workshop + drafting support
Outcome
Funder accepted the section as satisfactory at first pass

SME, health tech

A small AI health company preparing for procurement reviews.

A twenty-person startup selling clinical decision support to NHS trusts kept being asked about responsible innovation in tender questionnaires. We ran the PAS 440 Training course with their R and D and product teams and helped them write a one-page responsible innovation statement.

Format
PAS 440 Training, then advisory drafting
Outcome
Statement now reused across procurement responses

See PAS 440 Training.

Public sector lab

A government innovation team running its first AREA workshop.

A small public-sector innovation team wanted to use AREA on a live policy pilot involving algorithmic decision-making. We ran a single-day workshop with the project leads, produced a one-page anticipation memo together, and handed it on to their internal ethics function.

Format
One day, on-site, six participants
Outcome
Memo accepted as their de facto anticipation record

Independent researcher

A post-doc using the self-assessment tool before a progression panel.

An early career researcher was asked to talk about the responsible innovation aspects of her work at a progression panel. She ran the free self-assessment tool the week before, used the output to draft a one-page reflection, and walked into the meeting with something concrete to talk about.

Format
Free tool, self-led
Outcome
Panel cited the reflection in its feedback as a strength

Try the self-assessment tool.
